Process.
Step 1: select 6 languages: English, Russian Swahili, Chinese, Spanish and Arabic.
Step 2: place word ‘nude’ in Google translate to interpret word from English ‘nude’ into one of the 5 other languages, the first word that appears as a translation is then placed…
Step 3: …into the Google search page representing a country that speaks the language e.g. for Arabic I choose Saudi Arabia as a representative country.
Step 4: I selected the first 300 images that appear.
Step 5: created a video of the process and sequential images that were robotically selected by the digital translation of the word ‘nude.’
The nude was first drawn on a cave wall using the technology of charcoal created through fire, then sculpture through the technology of metal. As technologies are created, the human body is translated into unique representations. This project demonstrates how digital technology affects the representation of the nude through its electronic translation.
